U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that the U.S. government has acquired one of the largest batches of B-2 bombers in years.
The announcement was made by Trump last Monday, October 13, during his speech at the Knesset in Israel, while celebrating the U.S. military achievements in the Midnight Hammer Operation in June.
In the mission, the U.S. stealth fleet took center stage with an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, an attack described by senior Air Force officials as the most important of their careers.
Seven B-2 stealth bombers flew for more than a day and a half, dropping 14 of the Pentagon’s heaviest bombs, capable of destroying bunkers, on underground targets deep in Iran.
The mission also involved F-22 and F-35 stealth fighters, which escorted the bombers into Iranian airspace, one of the most protected airspaces in the world.
After celebrating the achievement, Trump made the announcement of the new acquisition to Israeli lawmakers: “In fact, [the U.S.] just ordered 28 more units. A slightly updated version. We ordered a bunch of them.”
It is the largest order of B-2 stealth bombers since the aircraft first entered service in 1997, and it comes at a time when many suggest it could mark the early stages of a Third World War.
Although he described the new bombers as “similar, but actually quite different,” the Pentagon has yet to confirm any formal acquisition contract with Northrop Grumman, the original manufacturer of the B-2.
